A business case is an important tool to legitimize a change project. It is a compilation of specific programme information – benefits and risks, costs and timescales – and describes how the programme’s outcomes are valuable to the organization. One of the most difficult challenges in this regard is that not all benefits are quantifiable in simple figures. Nevertheless, quantification will have to be done to the greatest extent possible.

Short-term improvements
Quick wins are important, because they show the organization that short-term and low-cost results can be achieved in line with the final outcome as defined in the vision, turning the vision into a part of daily reality.

Long-term improvements
To realize the desired outcome of the vision, quick wins are not sufficient. Structural, long-term improvements are also required, and inextricably lead to business changes: alternative methods of working, new skills for employees, a different culture and complex IT issues. The time required for full realization is often long (3 to 5 years).
